What are the Symptoms of Diverticulitis?

Faiz

You are busy doing some work or just relaxing, suddenly you feel pain in the lower abdominal area. You touch it and it hurts. What do you think is the cause? It may be due to a diverticulitis attack because these two are the main symptoms of diverticulitis. Before discussing the other symptoms it will be better if you understand how this condition develops.

The diverticulitis disease was a very rare case before the 1900s. It was noticed in the U.S of A at a time when processed foods were introduced. So the doctors have a belief and it may be true that low fiber diet is the main cause of diverticulitis.

How does diverticulitis develop?

In todays world people are eating foods which were unknown before like the processed foods, refined foods, the junk food, chocolates ( in huge quantities) and several other foods. Your digestive system does not have the ability to digest it correctly. When the digestion is not proper you will have trouble passing it out of your body. You have to apply pressure on the colon many times. Due to this your colon becomes weak and some of the weakest points bulge out to form pouches. These are called diverticula.

When a small particle enters these pouches it will get infected and inflammed. This condition is known as diverticulitis. In most of the cases it is mild in nature but sometimes it can become severe. Actually only 10% to 25% of people with
diverticula suffer from diverticulitis. You should be careful and try to avoid this condition in your body.

What are the symptoms of diverticulitis?

As stated earlier the major symptom of diverticulitis is abdominal pain. The infected area will become tender and hurts when touched. Usually the left side of lower abdomen is affected. You can expect this to happen suddenly and unexpectedly. So you should be observing your body for these symptoms. The other related symptoms can be

  • Fever along with chills
  • Constipation ( i.e., irregular and difficult evacuation of bowels )
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Cramps ( i.e., painful muscular contraction )
  • Diarrhea ( i.e., frequent and watery bowel movements )

The condition preceding diverticulitis, which is the formation of small pouches does not have visible symptoms. So the chances of avoiding diverticulitis may be small and most people will not give attention to the pain. In one case I read that a person had acute pains in the abdominal area but he took it lightly. His condition became so severe that he had to undergo surgery. So you are advised to take care of your health and observe your body for sudden changes.

Remember these symptoms of diverticulitis and whenever you feel that something strange is happening in the abdominal area get a medical checkup done.
